Liv Ingeborg Ottersen (b. 1966) is a Norwegian artist whose practice is rooted in painting, often abstract and conceptually driven, with sewn figures and textile-based surfaces that explore repetition, layering, and materiality. Fabric has long been central to her work, and she has worked with tulle for many years, using it as a grid-like overlay in her paintings as well as a translucent material that allows light and colour to interact in delicate, layered ways.
Her practice has recently extended into installation, where tulle now inhabits the space in between, engaging with architectural structures—soft, flowing fabric in dialogue with solid arches. While venturing into installation, she continues to work with paintings, allowing the two approaches to coexist and inform each other, creating a dynamic conversation between surface, material, and space.
Ottersen’s work moves fluidly between abstract expressionism, sewn figuration, and spatial interventions, always considering how materials occupy and transform environments. Lines, traces, and gestures—whether sewn, painted, or suspended—record movement, memory, and interaction, inviting viewers to perceive subtle connections within a space.
Born in Oslo, she studied at Otis College of Art and Design (BFA), the Art Institute of Southern California, Westerdals School of Communication, and the National Teachers College for Arts and Crafts in Oslo. Her life and work across cities including Copenhagen, London, Los Angeles, Granada (Spain), and Oslo have shaped an adaptable approach to both concept and material. Her textile-based surfaces, which can be rolled, sewn, or reassembled, reflect this mobility and adaptability in dialogue with architectural spaces.
In 2025, Ottersen presented a site-specific, interactive installation at the Larnaca Biennale, incorporating performance and textile to explore the interplay between material, movement, and environment. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at Kjøsterudgården and Grevens Grund (Åsgårdstrand), St. Olav’s Church (London), LA Art Club (California), Castillo Sabanillas (Spain), DC-3 Gallery (Norway), Norden Farm Centre for the Arts (UK), and ACAD Gallery (Laguna), and is included in private and international collections.
